From Tuesday 12th November 2019 to Sunday 5th January 2020 from 10 am to 5 pm only closed on Mondays you will be able to hear Echoes of Epping Forest. To the residents of Woodford, Loughton and Chigwell the forest is an endless source of delight and activity.
Unearthing Stories of the Forest is part of The People's Forest season and falls under part of the Borough of culture events. The series of events has been exploring our relationship with Epping Forest; interrogating the deep bond we have with forests and woodland, and how this relationship is culturally determined. Epping Forest’s Artist-in-Residence, composer/violinist Ellie Wilson, has created new pieces inspired by human impact on Epping Forest.
She says: “I grew up near Epping Forest and it’s been a part of my life for as long as I can remember – I learned to ride my bike at Connaught Water, went on school trips to Suntrap, and hung out there with my teenage friends. Now it’s a place I go to escape the speed of the city for a few hours and enjoy nature. My work takes a journey through centuries of our incredible local history, from the Iron-Age Loughton Camp, the story of Thomas Willingale (my 5 x Great Uncle!), and WWII bomb craters that are now ponds”.
‘Echoes: Unearthing Stories of the Forest’ is also available as an album, and as a public installation at The View visitor centre. Epping Forest Visitor Centre at Chingford, Rangers Road, Chingford, London E4 7QH the event is Free and no booking is required.
The forest occupies a unique space in our human psyche, the uneasy relationship we have with trees has created the setting and tension that is found at the roots of so much of our folklore and fairy tales. Ellie Wilson’s fantastic free sound installation Echoes unearths the stories of the Forest comprising a set of new music compositions exploring the human impact on Epping Forest through the centuries for the contemporary residents of Chigwell, Woodford and Loughton to enjoy.
