Chinese brush painting workshop

Having a go at Chinese brush painting might have always been on your crafting list to do. And on 2nd March 2019 from 11 am to 4 pm you can do just that at the William Morris Gallery not far from Chigwell, Loughton or Woodford. They invite you to come and be inspired by their Cultural Revolution exhibition and learn how to paint some of the most renowned motifs in Chinese painting such as plum blossom, the egret and traditional Chinese landscapes.

The Chinese brush painting workshop will be led by Margaret Wall who is a Chinese brush painting artist and tutor. All the materials you need will be provided. Margaret is part of the UK National Society for Chinese Brush Painting. They are a network and information source for those fascinated by this ancient oriental art.

The William Morris Gallery is housed in a Georgian house, built in the 1740s and set in Lloyd Park in Walthamstow, in north-east London. The grade II* listed building was Morris's family home from 1848 to 1856. The building is a very fine example of Georgian domestic architecture dating from about 1744. If you are interested in beautiful buildings and the Arts and Crafts movement there is a lot more to see.

From 1848 to 1856, the house was the family home of William Morris (1834-1896), the designer, craftsman, writer, conservationist and socialist. Morris lived here with his widowed mother and his eight brothers and sisters from the age of fourteen until he was twenty-two.

It is a fine example of the kind of out of London life that many have sought for their children. The young Morrises used the garden moat for boating and fishing in summer and for ice-skating in winter. It’s said, “One of William’s younger brothers, Thomas Rendal Morris, briefly ‘marooned’ himself on the island after reading Robinson Crusoe, but soon crept back into the house when the night began to fall.”
