Chigwell Village so central, so rural

The village of Chigwell was once on the main coaching route between London and Chipping Ongar. Now the village is mostly a conservation area of elegant Georgian houses, pretty weather-boarded cottages, 12th-century St Mary’s Church, and Chigwell School, founded in 1629.

In the heart of the village are the shops and businesses in Brook Parade, opposite the station, are a clue to the neighbourhood’s wealth. It’s not your usual mix of late-night grocery stores and takeaways but there are plenty of beauty salons and designer boutiques.

The beauty of Chigwell is that parts of it feel very rural but it’s only 12.5miles (20km) from central London and just half an hour from Liverpool Street on the Central line in Zone 4. The road links are just as good with the M11 skirting the town, and Stansted airport about 40 minutes away.

Some of the best roads to live on are around Chigwell Golf Club and include Forest Lane, Manor Road, Stradbroke Drive and Hainault Road, where mini-mansions are set back from the road behind wrought-iron gates. The houses are all different but most have been extensively refurbished, extended and modernised and, in some cases, completely rebuilt.

Around the area the demand for new-builds is high and there are a lot of individual property developers. Open-plan styling is still popular as is digging down into the basement to create an underground swimming pool complex for full privacy. Chigwell offers all the glamour of central London with a rural fee.

If you would like enjoy everthing Chigwell has on offer here is a truly exquisite Grade II Georgian family residence built in the 1830's is steeped in historic features of the period including high ceilings and ornate cornicing.
