From the 30th July until 16th August 2019 at Grange Farm Centre Chigwell, Essex, IG7 6DP there will be pond dipping? Did you know that beneath the surface of the water, there's an unseen world of amazing wildlife ready to be discovered. Pond dipping is part of the reason you would move your family to Chigwell, Loughton or Woodford – so they can get more of the great outdoors and connect to nature.
Pond dipping is something we can all do and it's loads of fun! There are all sorts of interesting creatures living in even the smallest of ponds. Maybe a mysterious alien-like dragonfly nymph, or a great diving beetle perhaps! Did you know Dragonflies have been around on earth for around 300 million years and some of the early species may have been the size of seagulls!
Set off on an expedition to Grange Farm Centre Chigwell pond, you could even do this as part of the RSPB's Wild Challenge. Maybe using this RSPB step by step guide; approach the water quietly and move slowly. Once you’re at the water’s edge, look into the water first to see what it is you may catch, see how it moves and where it hides! When you are safely set up and ready, slowly lower your net into the water. To keep the water flowing through the net, move it gently in a figure of eight motion. After a few gentle loops lift it out and place inside out in the water in your tray. The catch is then ready to be observed. When you've finished, carefully pour the content of your tray back into the pond.
What will you find lurking in the deeps of the pond? For Chigwell Pond dipping contact - Emma Grove 020 8500 3094, meet Emma next to the pond in the meadow at Grange Farm Centre Chigwell, any time between 1 pm and 4 pm. £3 per child. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
